In O[hio
The moon's a brilliant beacon in the ]sky.
Over hills, into [ valleys, it casts a silver glow.
A lantern laying light along the road
to guide the weary traveler to his home.
In Ohio
Stars are distant candles in the night.
Opalescent sparkles, mysteries of light,
Burning in the dome of summer sky
Crystalize the beauty of July.
In Ohio
Hills are rounded, worn by wind and snow.
Fences line the pastures; orchards stand in rows.
Cardinal sings a cheery tune.
Steeples in the distance mark a town.
A marble cloaked in clouds with streaks of blue and gray. I'm
Tracing out the sunrise line, to where my heart will stay
Two hundred fifty thousand miles away.
In Ohio
Air is warm with scent of field and hay
A soft breeze through the window as you wake to greet the day
Will carry taste of morning dew.
In Ohio there is you

Garden In The Grass
03:07
|
|||
In the middle of the meadow there's a hollow in the hill.
Sloping southward slightly sheltered by branches of a willow.
In winter you can't see it, just a shadow in the snow,
In spring there blooms a garden where purple iris grow
And you wonder why they grow there, what's the story of their sowing.
But the past's a distant mirror, there is no way of knowing.
Did a farmer plant them there, did a rodent hide her nest?
Did a child place a marker, where a pet was laid to rest?
No foundation tells a story, no path provides a clue
there's no history, no legend, to reveal the truth to you.
In the end it doesn't matter, the result is what you know:
a garden in the meadow, where purple iris grow.
Make your mark upon the stone, write your words upon the wind
paint a picture, build a tower, give comfort to a friend.
Your hand will touch the future, though your name be lost at last
If you leave behind some beauty, purple iris in the grass.
Make your mark upon the stone, write your words upon the wind.
Build a tower, plant a flower, play the mandolin
Reach out to the future, whatever seeds you sow,
Will leave behind a garden where purple iris grow

West Coast Blues

Five in th' mornin'. West Coast hotel room blues
Wanna getta cuppa coffee there's only hotel room brew
There's a Preacher on the TV; car crash in East Bay
Anchor's looking perky, but nothing deep to say.
'Nother day of meetings, 'til I can come home to you
Trapped inna room that's never seen th' light a' day.
Blue suit readin' bullet points off'a Powerpoint display.
Think I'll check my email, 'cause he ain't gonna stop,
Open (m') laptop, there's a photo on th' desktop
smilin' hazel eyes near - take my breath away
Yeah, smilin' hazel eyes really take my breath away
(Well)Flew out Tuesday, Flyin' back Friday
This week's shot, back to work on Monday
Catch up on the weekend,
maybe get some sleep then,
Get sumpin' done a'fore I fly away again
Jet Blue back t'Boston; redeye, San Jose
Tunnel t' I90, push th' limit all th' way.
Keep an eye on the mirror for flashing blue and red
Turn in th' driveway, feel like headin' straight for bed
But laughin' hazel eyes - -brighten up my day
Yeah, laughin' hazel eyes - chase my blues away

Autumn
04:46
|
|||
There's sun glow on the horizon.
A hint of frost in the air. It's
halfway between light and dark.
(I'm) Half asleep in a half tipped chair. A
mourning dove sings her [Em]morning song.
Crow is in his tree. There's a
rooster calling to greet the dawn. He
must have had his morning tea.
There's a rain cloud on the horizon. Doing
Morning chores alone.
Splitting wood; stacking logs. An
eye on the cloud; An ear on the phone.
Wild geese sing their traveling song;
Echos cross the bay.
rooster's been singin' all morning long. He
sure has got something to say.
I'm staring out at the horizon. Watching
wind blown leaves in the air.
Watching that cloud; watching the road;
Checking the mail, there's nothing there. A
Red-tail banks, her colors showing,
buoyed by the breeze
That damn rooster's still crowing
Rooster just does what he please
There's a full moon on the horizon.
Red and gold in the west.
Watching the colors fade away,
Outside, in gloves and vest.
Can of soup in the kitchen;
re-reading that note on the door.
That Rooster finally stopped crowing.
Maybe his throat got sore.

Time To Let Go
04:13
|
|||
Rest your head on my hand / May my touch ease the pain,
Remind us of days we were younger. Since then fifteen summers have flown.
Those days are gone. / Winter has come.
There's frost in your fur, chill in your bone. / Its time to let go
Time to let go, when the burden's too heavy.
Time to let go, when life's sweetness is lost.
Those left behind will ]live with the sorrow
They know in the end comes time to let go
When my own journey's done / When my ship nears the bar,
May I recall a life lived like yours: Peaceful and harmful to none
I'll wish for the gift / Granted to some
Choosing the place, Choosing the time / and how to let go
When you entered my life / A bargain we made.
I'd give protection and care. You'd give acceptance and trust
Trust I can feel / and pain I can't heal
All I can give is a turn of the wheel / help you let go

Plastic Buddha
03:01
|
|||
When I set out on a journey,
though the road be twisty turney,
or the path be straight and narrow,
there's one constant that I bring.
Riding shotgun on the dashboard -
facing backward, looking inward -
my companion on life's highway
Plastic Buddha on a spring.
O Plastic Buddha, my companion
bring me joy and understandin'
Help me neutralize the tension,
as I navigate today.
When some kid in a Suburban
cuts me off and takes my parking place
remind me of my inner peace
as I go on my way.
Bald of head and robe of yellow,
he's a soulful little fellow
Bouncing on his spring
to the rhythm of the road
His expression of serenity
reminds me of what has to be.
Helps me keep my sanity;
makes sure I don't explode.
O Plastic Buddha, my companion / bring me joy and understandin'
Help me neutralize the tension, / as I navigate today.
When a Texan in his Lexus flips me off then takes the exit
Remind me of my inner peace / As I go on my way
When I'm sittin' in construction
and I'm sobbin in frustration,
and the lights stretch to eternity:
well, at least it feels that way.
Plastic Buddha helps my patience,
keeps me calm, brings me acceptance
As I watch him do his spring dance;
his gentle bob and sway
O Plastic Buddha, my companion / bring me joy and understandin'
Help me neutralize the tension, / as I navigate today.
When I'm trapped behind a folkie driving slowly in his Prius
Remind me of my inner peace / As I go on my way
